چکیده

A simple spatial computer simulation model was recently introduced to study the evolution of the linguistic diversity [1]. The model considers processes of selective geographic colonization, linguistic anomalous diffusion and mutation. In the approach, we ascribe to each language a fitness function which depends on the number of people that speak that language. Here we extend the aforementioned model to examine the role of saturation of the fitness on the language dynamics. We found that the dependence of the linguistic diversity on the area after colonization displays a power law regime with a nontrivial exponent in very good agreement with the measured exponent associated with the actual distribution of languages on the Earth.

Investigation of Pedodiversity Indices, Soil Differentiation and Soil-Landscape Evolution in the Semi-Arid Region of Chaharmahal-Va-Bakhtiyari Province

Landscapes are considered as a series of different land units with a size, shape and location arrangement that are permanently under the influence of natural events and human activities. Understanding the dynamics and heterogeneity of landscapes and environmental changes is of great importance. In order to quantitatively analyze and interpret the factors affecting the changes in the environment...

Properties of selected mutations and genotypic landscapes under Fisher's geometric model.

The fitness landscape-the mapping between genotypes and fitness-determines properties of the process of adaptation. Several small genotypic fitness landscapes have recently been built by selecting a handful of beneficial mutations and measuring fitness of all combinations of these mutations. Here, we generate several testable predictions for the properties of these small genotypic landscapes un...

Measurement of long-term denudation rates in carbonate landscapes using in situ-produced 36Cl cosmogenic nuclide

ecent progresses have been made in the quantification of denudation of eroding landscapes and its links with topography. Despite these advances, data is still sparse in carbonate terrain, which covers a significant part of the Earth’s surface. We can now measure in situ-produced cosmogenic nuclides concentrations in various near-surface materials, allowing accurate quantification of the rates o...

Adaptation increases the likelihood of diversification in an experimental bacterial lineage.

Understanding the mechanisms and processes that generate biological diversity is a fundamental problem in evolution and ecology. In the past decade, the theory of evolutionary branching and adaptive diversification has provided new perspectives for understanding the evolution of diversity caused by ecological interactions. In models of adaptive diversification, the fitness landscapes change dyn...

Evolution in time-dependent fitness landscapes

Evolution in changing environments is an important, but little studied aspect of the theory of evolution. The idea of adaptive walks in fitness landscapes has triggered a vast amount of research and has led to many important insights about the progress of evolution. Nevertheless, the small step to time-dependent fitness landscapes has most of the time not been taken. In this work, some elements...
